Jennifer Warnes『Jennifer』1972
"Warner Bros in Japan has taken some liberties with this album without my participation, so forgive me if I have mixed feelings about this one. With all due respect to the remastering engineer, Mr. Isao Kikuchi seems to have listened carefully to the music. His changes did not make this album worse, but he made it different.

The album was released on CD for the first time in 2013. Despite the long-awaited digital release, for some reason it was reissued only in Japan.
Jennifer Warnes herself, however, expressed fairly explicit reservations about the sound on her own website.

Listening to the CD on its own, I think it is a very good remaster. I doubt that many audiophiles would find much to complain about. And that was precisely why I had always wondered what Warnes meant by “different.”
Recently, I finally had the chance to listen to an original US pressing on vinyl, and suddenly I thought, “Ah, now I understand.”
Warnes herself has not said much more about it, so I will refrain from going into the finer details of the sound here. But from the very beginning of the first track, I felt that it was clearly “different.”
With older recordings in particular, it is not unusual for CDs and vinyl records to differ enormously in terms of impact and physical presence. But even allowing for those inevitable differences, I found myself able to imagine why Warnes might have had such mixed feelings.
I even feel a certain sympathy for the frustration she may have felt: “They changed this without even consulting me.” At the same time, what most listeners would probably regard as tiny details hardly worth worrying about can be an uncomfortably persistent issue for the artist.
To repeat, I am not saying that the digital remaster ruined the album. The CD still allows you to fully appreciate what a masterpiece this is. But I understand all too well why an artist cannot simply say, “If you’re happy with it, then I’m happy too.”
What does a world-renowned singer-songwriter value most in her own expression? What does she want to convey to her listeners? And what must it have felt like to see her work released on CD, altered without her involvement?
Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but I cannot help feeling that, by hearing the original record, I caught a small glimpse of those things.
P.S. The CD reissued in 2018 and the versions currently available on streaming services appear to use the same master.
